It will eventually be published in full on Amazon. All of the Trace Troy books, as well as my other novels, can be purchased on Amazon by clicking the Bookstore tab above. I hope you enjoy. Paul, Sylvia, and Nick Escape

Trace anxiously looked out at the sea toward the seaplane, as if waiting for a thought to flash in his mind.

“We haven’t the time to draw straws or figure things out,” Trace said. “I’ll stay behind.”

“They will torture you,” Paul said.

“Only if they find me,” Trace waved with his arm and said. “Now, climb in the boat and get going.”

“We can’t leave you!” Paul said.

“It’s not hard to figure out,” Trace said. “Six people in a boat meant to carry four. We could all drown. Five can make it. A little slower, but can make it. There’s no boats or planes that can chase after you. Speed is not a concern. So go.” He made a motion as if shoving the wind.

“Sylvia, Paul, and Nick climbed into the boat.

Adam stood still.

“Dad, Pete,” Trace said, “get in.”

“I’m not leaving my son here alone,” Adam said.

“Dad,” Trace said, “I can do better on my own.”

“Your dad isn’t going and neither am I,” Pete said. “I’m not leaving my friend and his son here alone.

They looked at each other. A silent confirmation passed between them. They looked at Paul, Sylvia, and Nick sitting in the rubber boat.

“This isn’t fair,” Paul said.

“I’m staying!” Nick said.

“I’ve got a rifle,” Trace said. “I won’t shoot you, but I will knock you out and toss you in the boat.”

Paul and Sylvia climbed into the boat. Nick climbed reluctantly into the boat.

Trace and Adam grabbed both sides of the rubber boat and dragged it into the surf. Pete pushed from behind.

“You ever run one of these before?” Adam said to Paul.

“No,” Paul said.

“I have,” Nick said, “I was raised on a lake.”

“Then get going,” Adam said.

Nick pulled the starting rope, and the engine revved. He accelerated the engine and skimmed over the choppy waters toward the seaplane.

Paul, Sylvia, and Nick morosely waved chest high.

Trace, Adam, and Pete watched the boat speed away. They waved in the same manner in return.

Trace turned to Adam and Pete. He smiled. “I knew you two would stay. There’s too much glory here for one person.”

“How did you plan on not being found?” Adam said.

“Grandpa told me about the time he was looking for you,” Trace said to Adam. “He looked everywhere for you except up in a tree. Let’s get into the palms and do some climbing.”

They moved into the palms.

The sound of men walking through the thick undergrowth hastened them to find palms to climb. They picked three separate trees and shimmied their way to the top. They watched nervously as the searchers passed below.

The searchers reached the shore and conceded that everyone must have escaped using the rubber boat that was already halfway to the seaplane.

The searchers assembled and walked back to the compound by way of a footpath. Trace, Adam, and Pete climbed down from the palms. They made an opening in the undergrowth and rested.

“What next?” Pete asked.
